EBI - Your bibliography is weak (and in the wrong format, should be alphabetical by name of author/director). I know your topic is unusual but you need much more generic globalisation research. You also quote McLuhan's global village ' but don't reference it. Missed opportunities

-Written English isn't fluent enough for the top level. Read through and be brutal: what can you re-phrase to make a stronger, clearer point?

-You need much more media theory: can you add a selection on post-colonial theories like Said and further explore idea of US cultural imperialism . You mention but then move on - why not go into depth here

- I find the idea that globalisation is a two - way process with respect to K-pop fascinating... I'd explore this a bit more. Can you find more research in this area.

Preliminary Exercise & Evaluation

1) Why did you choose this particular recreation and how does it link to your main production?

I chose this particular recreation as it was a K-pop song which links with my critical investigation of 'To What extent is the Korean music industry influenced by the western music industry'. Furthermore, as I plan to do have a similar theme of romance in my main production, by doing this recreation, it has helped me to have a starting point of what kind of atmosphere I need to create for my main production.

2) What difficulties did you face in producing this recreation?

Difficulties that I encountered when producing this recreation was finding similar locations to the actual locations. The pure white home setting was quite difficult to recreate as almost everything seemed very untainted and completely immaculate. Also, it was quite difficult to edit the lighting to match with the real music video as well as finding the same costume and props as the actors in the music video. 

3) What are the strengths of the production?

Strengths of the music video are that I managed to stick to the 30 seconds and rather accurately copied the music video.

4) What aspects would you look to improve?

I would like to improve the actual settings of the recreation to make it look more like the original and maybe direct my actors to act a bit more accurately to the original.

5) What lessons will you take from this process that will help you with your main production?

I think that planning really helped with my production as I knew exactly what each shot was and how to film it. Furthermore, I think finding the perfect settings for my main production will greatly help with setting the atmosphere that I would want to create.  

6) Now that you are ready to start your actual linked production, explain clearly what you will be creating and how confident you are in delivering this.

I will be creating a music video for a K-pop song  After the preliminary exercise, I feel much more confident in making this music video as I know the kind of settings and costume that I would need in order to create the atmosphere and tone of the music video which I would like to create.

Essay plan

Introduction looks solid but I would try and include institution and globalisation if possible. Also – absolutely essential to properly introduce your primary text. 250 words.

Section 1 – historical text and context to issue/genre. 300 words.

Section 2 – Globalisation. This can contextualise your investigation in terms of media issues/debates and the contemporary media landscape. Theory here too. 300 words.

Section 3 – Primary text, textual analysis. Link to representation, westernisation – should follow on very nicely from globalisation. 500 words.

Section 4 – Wider context, social issues…. SHEP. Impact on Korean society. Plenty of research here ideally. 300 words.

Section 5 – Cultural imperialism, loss of distinct Korean culture. Theory. Try to avoid crossover or repetition from globalisation paragraph. 400 words.

Section 6 – The other side of the argument: is Korean music influencing the western music industry? Gangham Style – secondary text analysis. New and digital media – YouTube phenomenon. 300 words.

Section 7 – the future: how might Korean music / western influence change in the next 5-10 years? 250 words.

Conclusion – sum up argument. Snappy final line. 150 words.

Next steps… update/finish your plan based on this tutorial. You don’t need to stick to the above by any means but hopefully it has at least clarified your thinking and provided a potential structure that will be easy to follow.

I need to have a quick read of your opening paragraph when it’s written but otherwise you are good to go.

This essay has great potential – the key is making sure there is a strong thread running through it, linking the various texts and issues you are discussing. Avoid repetition too!

Notes and quotes just under 2500 - looking good despite lack of Media Mag research available due to unusual topic choice.

Textual Analysis looking like a real strength even before Task #1.

Academic books/ journals/ dissertations already looking like a strength to the research. Keep looking and check BFI catalogues too in case they have anything relevant.

Widen your search away from Kpop and look at globalisation and cultural imperialism more generally. This will create far more opportunities for academic book and journal research. One pdf on M:drive to read plus plenty more on Amazon (which may be in the BFI library). Build these into your research plan.

I'd look for more internet- based research - only four links so far, this should be more like 20+ by the end of the process. The guardian is a great starting point.then search far and wide for K pop AND globalisation-based links.
