Critical Investigation Tutorial 3

Essay plan

Introduction looks solid but I would try and include institution and globalisation if possible. Also – absolutely essential to properly introduce your primary text. 250 words.

Section 1 – historical text and context to issue/genre. 300 words.

Section 2 – Globalisation. This can contextualise your investigation in terms of media issues/debates and the contemporary media landscape. Theory here too. 300 words.

Section 3 – Primary text, textual analysis. Link to representation, westernisation – should follow on very nicely from globalisation. 500 words.

Section 4 – Wider context, social issues…. SHEP. Impact on Korean society. Plenty of research here ideally. 300 words.

Section 5 – Cultural imperialism, loss of distinct Korean culture. Theory. Try to avoid crossover or repetition from globalisation paragraph. 400 words.

Section 6 – The other side of the argument: is Korean music influencing the western music industry? Gangham Style – secondary text analysis. New and digital media – YouTube phenomenon. 300 words.

Section 7 – the future: how might Korean music / western influence change in the next 5-10 years? 250 words.

Conclusion – sum up argument. Snappy final line. 150 words.

Next steps… update/finish your plan based on this tutorial. You don’t need to stick to the above by any means but hopefully it has at least clarified your thinking and provided a potential structure that will be easy to follow.

I need to have a quick read of your opening paragraph when it’s written but otherwise you are good to go.

This essay has great potential – the key is making sure there is a strong thread running through it, linking the various texts and issues you are discussing. Avoid repetition too!

Critical Investigation Task #4 Essay plan

To What Extent is the Western Music Industry influencing the Korean Music Industry

Introduction
  • Korean Pop music is becoming increasingly influenced by the Western music industry. Are Korean audiences becoming desensitized to these changes or is it creating a moral panic to the country?
  •  Does Kpop sustain their audience before this change or have they acquired a new audience?
  • "K-Pop is definitely Korean pop music, but it is also a kind of transnational hybrid music that refers to other global popular music in various ways." pg.2
  • "This is a paradox of K-Pop: in order to succeed in the global market, it needs to be de-nationalized; however, de-nationalization often makes domestic audiences feel uneasy about potentially losing the national identity" pg 203-204

De-nationalization and Re-nationalization of Culture: The Globalisation of Kpop

Paragraph 1
Historical Text - S.E.S - I'm Your Girl
  • Introduction to Kpop
  • Textual Analysis of the historical text leading to audience theory, reception theory and stereotypes
Paragraph 2
Globalization
  • The internet has made it easier to access the world's news, information and entertainment.
  • Korea's original social norms and censorship and how it has changed with the influences of western culture

Paragraph 3
Primary Text - AOA - Like A Cat
  • Textual Analysis of the primary text
  • Different Audience, desensitized of the sexualization of women
  • Susceptible to westernized influences of artists
Paragraph 4
Social issues
  • Young children's aspirations, breaking into the industry is becoming more appealing
  • Very young artist's portrayal in industry, excessive fan culture
Paragraph 5
Re-developing normalities and de-nationalization of South Korea
  • Non Korean kpop idols, acts as marketing techniques to attract wider audiences
  • Loss of Korean culture in music videos, despite Kpop's popularity, western music is still more popular

Paragraph 6
Impacting the western world
  • PSY's Gangnam Style, paving the pathway for future artists to make a career in america
  • CL, managed by Scooter Braun, impending american début, high expectations
  • Artists try to shed their korean image by singing in english (exception PSY)
Conclusion
  • Heavily influenced by western culture will desensitize and change audience
  • Massive pride of the country therefore de-nationalization will be difficult to occur

Critical Investigation Tutorial 2

Notes and quotes just under 2500 - looking good despite lack of Media Mag research available due to unusual topic choice.

Textual Analysis looking like a real strength even before Task #1.

Academic books/ journals/ dissertations already looking like a strength to the research. Keep looking and check BFI catalogues too in case they have anything relevant.

Widen your search away from Kpop and look at globalisation and cultural imperialism more generally. This will create far more opportunities for academic book and journal research. One pdf on M:drive to read plus plenty more on Amazon (which may be in the BFI library). Build these into your research plan.

I'd look for more internet- based research - only four links so far, this should be more like 20+ by the end of the process. The guardian is a great starting point.then search far and wide for K pop AND globalisation-based links.

Task #1 – you’ve already done excellent textual analysis of your primary text so I’m happy for you to move on to secondary texts.
